The Quest for Truth and Peace (General Education Course)

Dr. Andrew Loke

Date :

26 March 2014 (Wed)

Time 18:30 - 20:30

Venue

P3, Chong Yuet Ming Physics Building, The University of Hong Kong

Many people today regard religions that claim to have absolute truth as arrogant, intolerant, and disruptive to global peace. Many others, however, have continued to look to religion for certainty and for the answers to humanity's deepest questions, such as 'What is the ultimate meaning of life?', 'Where do I come from?', and 'Where am I going?'

Are ultimate questions answerable? Doesn't the situated-ness of human understanding imply that they are not? Aren't all viewpoints concerning absolute truth hopelessly biased? Isn't it all a matter of perspective and interpretation? In this course, we shall discover how leading contemporary postmodernist, atheist, and Christian thinkers wrestle with these difficult questions, and how an understanding of these issues might contribute to personal and global peace.

Session 1 | 26/3
The postmodernists' quest for tolerance and peace
On relativism, situated-ness, bias, perspectives and interpretation

Session 2 | 2/4
On uncertainties, lack of consensus, arrogance, intolerance, and hermeneutics of suspicion
Fulfilling the longing for Truth and Peace
