Inspired by the dialogue-format of the “Design Roulette” initiated by Asia Design Forum, the “Art-Faith-Humanity Roulette” brings together six figures from the field of visual art, design and architecture to present thoughts about their work, while engaging in a sequential dialogue, on the relationship between the Christian faith, their creative practice and values of humanity.
In the context of an increasing distance between society and the church, and where secularism and pluralism have become the norms, issues of “art”, “faith” and “humanity” are rarely discussed as part of one necessary equation. Yet, the Christian theological tradition has always called for an integrative model-where all of life, including one's creative endeavour, is to be seen in light of the divine redemptive work to bring about personal and cultural flourishing.
This is, no doubt, a tall order and the event is not meant to provide easy steps of integrating art, faith and humanity. Work, afterall, is a place of paradox, with its share of pleasures and pain. Nevertheless, through presentations, dialogues and discipline–specific breakout sessions, the Roulette hopes to inspire and challenge our thoughts and practice by discerning God at work in individual hearts and the world to renew all things for the common good.
